What is a colonoscopy?

A colonoscopy is a procedure that involves using a colonoscope to look inside the rectum and colon. A colonoscope is a thin, flexible tube with a tiny camera on the end. A colonoscopy can help with screening for colon polyps and colorectal cancer. A doctor may also recommend colonoscopy if a person experiences symptoms such as bleeding from the anus, diarrhea or other bowel changes, abdominal pain, and unexplained weight loss.

How long does a colonoscopy take?

A colonoscopy takes around 30 minutes. Afterward, a person may need to stay at the clinic or hospital for around 30 to 60 minutes. This is because they will need to wait for the sedation to wear off. A person may also need to arrange for somebody to take them home after the procedure, as they will not be able to drive due to the sedation.

What foods can I eat after a colonoscopy?

Following a colonoscopy, a person may need to eat foods low in fiber and dairy. This is because it is important to consume foods that are easier to digest. Examples of foods a person may be able to have after a colonoscopy include soup, scrambled eggs, mashed potatoes, yogurt, and pudding. A person can consume their usual diet by the next day following a colonoscopy, but it is best to check with a doctor or surgeon about any dietary suggestions they may need to follow before and after the procedure.
