Dr. Zhen Gooi personifies the adage “A truly amazing doctor is hard to find – and impossible to forget.” It was with a heavy heart that we first met Dr. Gooi in 2021 after my husband had been diagnosed with laryngeal cancer. Dr. Gooi’s realistic assessment of the condition and treatment helped us make informed decisions. He made certain that we understood the clinical side of my husband’s surgery and recovery and patiently answered all our questions. We wisely trusted Dr. Gooi as he led a team of world class medical professionals through a successful surgery and recovery. Since then Dr. Gooi has been exceptional in monitoring my husband’s progress. He has been accessible and ensured all the necessary resources have been available for his continued improvement. In additional to being a highly skilled surgeon, Dr. Gooi treated not only the disease but my husband who had the disease with dignity and respect. His compassion, dedication, and caring heart guided us through a difficult journey. We have come to know Dr. Gooi as a man of honor and integrity; we are blessed to have him in our life.

Dr. Gooi’s thorough and realistic approach combined with his calm demeanor were reassuring at a very dark time in my life. His guiding hand and the team at the University of Chicago made my total laryngectomy a successful procedure with very positive results. Beyond his world class surgical skills for the 12 ½ hour procedure were his personal follow ups to guide my recovery. His professional knowledge and personal caring did not end at the hospital. I was surprised to receive personal calls from him after hours the day after my release from the hospital and those calls have continued through the last 2 ½ years of recovery. Dr. Gooi is more than a world class physician, he is a world class person of devotion to his patients medical and psychological needs, and the improvement of his medical field. I cannot give a high enough review for all that Dr. Gooi has done to save my life. He provided unmatched medical guidance and positive reinforcement to me and my family.
