My son went in for an annual checkup . Copay was paid during visit only to later receive additional charges for items that were completely routine. 1st, I was billed for 'vaccine counseling” because the nurse asked if we wanted the HPV vaccine & I declined. The interaction lasted a few seconds which resulted in a $52 charge. 2nd, we were billed for a behavioral assessment because my son filled out a basic one-page form about depression while waiting for the Dr.. No concerns were discussed. No follow-up conversation occurred. We have completed this exact same form every year for the past 4 years & have never once been billed for it. 3rd, we were billed separately for a standard eye chart vision screening. Every routine part of a preventative visit was broken apart into separate billable charges. Patients should not have to stop every 1–2 minutes during an appointment to ask, “Is this going to cost extra?” Families deserve transparency before charges are added, not surprise billing.
