I had a consultation with Dr. Galakatos for hip surgery. He said my vitamin d-3 level was low and wrote an order to get it tested at Quest Lab. For this simple test I was billed $266 because the order was written so that it was not covered by Medicare. My doctor would have done this test in his office and billed my insurance at no cost to me. When I asked Jennifer, his assistant, why this simple test was so costly, she said, "Dr. Galakatos doesn't know the cost when he writes an order". The unspoken rest of that sentence is "nor does he care". Medical cost are high enough even with expensive insurance. I do not want to be treated by a doctor who does not care how much I am charged.
