Temporomandibular disorders (TMD), which some people refer to as "TMJ," are conditions that cause pain and dysfunction in the temporomandibular joint (TMJ) and muscles in the jaw. There are more than 30 types of TMD, some of which affect the TMJ. The TMJ is at the front of the ear, where the jawbone connects to the head.
What does TMJ feel like?
TMJ pain due to TMD can feel like clicking or popping when opening or closing the mouth. The pain may spread to the face or neck. A person may also experience jaw stiffness and limited movement of the jaw.
Can wisdom teeth cause TMJ disorders?
If wisdom teeth cause an uneven bite, they can contribute to TMD. For example, a 2023 study showed that removal of problematic maxillary third molars (wisdom teeth) significantly reduced headache and neck pain in people with TMD.
How long does TMJ last?
Symptoms of TMDs can last a short while before going on their own, but they may also become chronic. A person can help manage symptoms during this time by consuming soft foods, taking pain relief medication, and applying a cool pack or heat therapy to the area. If pain does not improve or go away, it is best to contact a doctor. In some cases, the doctor may recommend medical treatments.
