What are hemorrhoids?

Hemorrhoids, or piles, are swollen, enlarged veins around the anus or rectum. Internal hemorrhoids occur in the lining of the anus and lower rectum, while external hemorrhoids form under the skin around the anus. Possible symptoms include bleeding, itchiness, soreness, and a hard or tender lump near the anus.

What causes hemorrhoids?

Possible causes of hemorrhoids include straining during bowel movements, having chronic diarrhea or constipation, or sitting on the toilet for extended periods. They can also develop when the supporting tissues in the anus and rectum become weaker over time. Pregnancy and frequently lifting heavy objects can also lead to hemorrhoids.

What do hemorrhoids look like?

Hemorrhoids are tender lumps that may appear pink or purple in color. Small hemorrhoids are about the size of a pea, but in some cases they can become larger, about the size of a grape.

How long do hemorrhoids last?

Hemorrhoids typically last a few days. Avoiding straining during a bowel movement and taking care to be gentle when wiping can help prevent further damage while they heal. If hemorrhoids last longer than a week with over-the-counter or home remedies, it is important to contact a doctor.
