Anybody can get fibromyalgia. However, it is more common in people assigned female at birth. It affects females in 80–96% of cases.

The Social Security Administration (SSA) recognizes fibromyalgia as a disability. A person will need to provide evidence from a medical professional and meet certain criteria if they claim disability benefits with the SSA.
