What is considered chronic pain?

Chronic pain usually refers to pain that lasts for at least 3 months. Pain may also be chronic if it lasts longer than the expected healing time.

What are common causes of chronic pain?

There are many possible causes of chronic pain. Conditions that may cause chronic pain include diabetes, sciatica, rheumatoid arthritis, fibromyalgia, and inflammatory bowel disease. If a person is experiencing ongoing pain, a doctor can help determine the cause of the pain and advise on treatments that may help.

Can chronic pain cause high blood pressure?

A 2020 study found that people who reported pain did not subsequently experience elevated blood pressure at a subsequent medical visit. However, 2013 article indicated that chronic pain may lead to an increase in blood pressure in some cases. More research is necessary to better understand this.

Can chronic pain cause depression?

Chronic pain increases a person's risk of depression and other mental health conditions. Around 35–45% of people with chronic pain experience depression. This compares to around 3.8% of the general population.
