What is arthritis?

Arthritis is an umbrella term for more than 100 conditions that cause joint pain, stiffness, and swelling. The most common types of arthritis are osteoarthritis and rheumatoid arthritis.

What causes arthritis?

Rheumatoid arthritis is a type of autoimmune inflammatory arthritis. This means that it develops when something causes the immune system to mistakenly attack the body's healthy tissue. Infectious arthritis happens due to an infection, while gout — or metabolic arthritis — occurs when uric acid crystals build up in the joints.
